Starting in the capital, Taipei, you’ll head east through the lush hills surrounding Taiwan’s capital, finding natural hot springs, waterfalls and hidden mountain communities along the way. You then hit the coast, where the East China Sea meets the Pacific, and from here hug the rugged coastline until we begin one of South East Asia’s most beautiful and challenging climbs, high into Taiwan’s central mountains.

But what goes up must come down, so after reaching the peak you’ll enjoy the once in a lifetime opportunity to glide more than 3000 vertical metres down through the iconic marble cliffs of Taroko Gorge, before a rest day exploring the food markets in the culinary capital of Taiwan - Hualien.

Back on the bike, you’ll meander through miles of ancient paddy fields and farming villages in Taiwan’s Rift Valley, before rejoining the undulating coastal road and following it all the way to Taiwan’s southernmost tip, Kenting. A surfing hot spot, grab a board or simply chill on the beach with an ice cold beer.

To wrap things up, you’ll complete your circuit of Taiwan by taking the High Speed Rail – with a top speed of 300km/h – back up the west coast to Taipei. After a day of seeing the sights, enjoy a memorable hot pot dinner in one of Taipei’s best-loved local restaurants to conclude the tour.

With everything taken care of by our experienced local guide and English support crew, all you have to do is keep calm, and pedal on!

Our four day King of the Mountain epic takes in Asia’s most challenging climb – the mighty ascent of Taroko Gorge to the highest road in Taiwan at 3280m – as we ride the whole way from Hualien through Taiwan’s precipitous peaks all the way back to Taipei. By the time you roll back into the capital you’ll have ridden 450km and have climbed the equivalent of Mt. Everest – so this isn’t one for the fainthearted.

The price of the tour includes 13 nights accommodation, breakfast and lunch, local guide/ride leader, support vehicle, and internal transport. With a vastly experienced guide and a support vehicle with you at all times, you can rest easy and focus on the ride!

We kick off with an early morning departure by rail to the city of Hualien on the east coast of the country. From the station we’ll jump on the pedals straight away for our warm up ride. We’ll cover approximately 60km, taking in the beautiful Liyu Lake and the first climb of the tour – a steep but relatively short ascent to a fantastic viewpoint overlooking the city to the north and the Pacific to the east.

After arriving back into the city, we’ll fuel up for the day ahead with a visit to Hualien’s famous night market for dinner before an early night ahead of the main event – climbing Taroko Gorge.

We’ll set off early to ensure we get the best of the weather as we track the route of the Taiwan KOM Challenge – won last year by cycling superstar Vincenzo Nibali – up Taroko Gorge. In this time we’ll climb a total of almost 4000m, topping out on Taiwan’s highest road of Wuling Pass at 3280m. The mountain scenery will be spectacular and the winding road is made for cycling.

From the summit we’ll descend to our accommodation for the night at Qingjing Farm. Day 2 will begin here as we retrace out steps and climb back up to Wuling Pass in preparation for a descent of epic proportions. Over the course of 175km in the saddle we’ll drop right back down to sea-level and the town of Jiaoxi. We’ll pass through lush forests, cycle past apple orchards and tea plantations, ride through the vast Lanyang river valley and end in the rice paddies of Jiaoxi.

Our final day on the road promises to be somewhat more gentle, but we still have 75km to cover to get back to the bright lights of Taipei. There are also two 500m high summits to scale, so the hard work isn’t quite over yet! The final descent into the city is spectacular and you’ll arrive in town by mid-afternoon – so if you’ve got to dash off back home then by all means do, but why not stick around for the evening and celebrate with a traditional hotpot dinner at one of Taipei’s most famous local restaurants?

A support vehicle will follow your every pedal, keeping you hydrated, well fed and in high spirits during the big climbs. But despite this, our route is seriously tough and should only be experience by experienced and most importantly, very fit cyclists that have trained sufficiently to spend a whole day in the saddle climbing uphill.

Enjoy a
seven-day tour of Taiwan's tea farms to learn the traditions, tastes, and cultivation techniques of Taiwanese tea. You'll be immersed in the most beautiful tea plantations, tasting fine oolong and Oriental Beauty tea varieties.

Day 1 – Taipei
• Fly into Taipei and transfer to your hotel.
• We’ll experience a tea ceremony, led by a local tea master and featuring a selection of Taiwan's finest teas. Enjoy dinner - with some excellent local tea, of course.
Day 2 – Hualien
• Early morning departure for a four-hour drive to Hualien. Stops along the way at the hot & cold springs park in Jiaoxi in Yilan County. Optional stops at Kavalan Whiskey distillery.
• After we’ve set you up in your hotel and you’ve taken a rest, we can look around this lively city of 100,000 people.
Day 3 – Ruisui District
• Basing ourselves in Hualien, today we’ll drive to Ruisui for scenery and, naturally, more tea. The district is famous for its hot springs; if you want to soak, bring your swimsuit. Along the way, we can make a stop at Danongdafu Forest Park, a former sugar plantation that’s been turned into a sprawling recreational woodland.
Day 4 – Sun Moon Lake
• From Hualien, we’ll start on a fabulous scenic drive through the mountains. The road crests at two miles above sea level, but before then we’ll likely halt for a cup of hot ginger tea at Bilu Sacred Tree.
• We’ll make regular stops so you can photograph the gorgeous panoramas, then descend toward one of Taiwan’s most famous attractions, Sun Moon Lake. You’ll arrive in time to see the lake (by private boat, if you let us know in advance) and take a short rest in your hotel before dinner.
Day 5 – Tea Plantations
• Among the lakeside attractions we’ll visit are Cien Pagoda and a pair of temples.
• After lunch, you can stretch your legs at the nearby Antique Assam Tea Farm, a restored Japanese-era tea plantation which is as educational as it is scenic. It’ll then be time to say goodbye to the lake and head to the oolong-growing part of the mountainous Alishan region.
Day 6 – Tea Plantations
• We’ll have the entire day to explore the Greater Alishan region, visit tea plantations, meet farmers and try their teas. The scenery throughout is wonderful; if you’d like to go for a hike, we’ll show you a trail that matches your physical condition.
• We can go for a gentle stroll through the forests around Fenqihu.
Day 7 – Wrap up
• Whatever time you fly out, we’ll help you make the very most of your final day in Taiwan. Before putting you on the bullet train at Chiayi HSR Station, we can bring you to the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum, which has a superb permanent exhibition about tea culture, as well as sections devoted to Asian textiles, Buddhist Art and other themes.

Our 4 day/5 nights Northern Adventures tour, explores the magical countryside and coastline around the capital, Taipei, in North-Eastern Taiwan. A circular route, commencing and finishing in the thriving capital city, will take us through 230km of some of Taiwan’s most stunning mountain jungle, and along pristine Pacific ocean roads. Coupled with incredible food and perfect road biking conditions, this is a stunning way to get a real taste of Taiwanese life in just a few days.

The price of the tour includes 5 nights accommodation, breakfast and lunch, local guide/ride leader, support vehicle, and internal transport. With a vastly experienced guide and a support vehicle with you at all times, you can simply relax and enjoy the ride, as well as savour the delights Taiwan has to offer – think night markets, national parks, temples, waterfalls, natural hot springs and so much more!

We kick off heading East out of Taipei, getting a brief taste of the hustle and bustle of urban life in the thriving metropolis, before quickly turning off into quiet country roads. A short sharp climb will help us find our legs before we maze along Daonan river, heading towards our lunch stop at Shifen. Here we will take in the beautiful old railway town, as well as the gorgeous waterfall, before attempting our big climb for the day. 300m of climbing later, we are at the summit, and it’s all downhill to the port city of Keelung - famed for it’s glorious seafood dinners - and our rest point for the night.

A short 15km south along the coast at the start of day 2, soon turn into a climb to the famed Japanese mining town of Juifen. Loved by tourists from all over the world, this small 19th century mountain town gained world-wide fame when it became the inspiration for the mystical setting of the film ‘Spirited Away’. Explore it’s winding old streets (as well as more than a few local delicacies!) before we climb onwards to the summit of the mountain. From the top, all that’s left to do is complete the winding descent towards the beach at Fulong, where we’ll spend the night.

Day 3 offers glorious costal views, as we ride the majority of the day on a separate cycle path following the edge of the Pacific ocean. Sandiojiao lighthouse and coffee stop with a hell of a view will keep us more than entertained, before we turn inland for the final time, through small paddy fields towards Jiaoxi. After lunch we will spend some time soaking in the natural hot springs, before completing our ride with a short climb (and possibly swim!) up to the spectacular Wufengchi waterfall.

Our final day on the road is our longest, with 75km to cover to get back to the bright lights of Taipei. There are also two 500m high summits to scale, so the hard work isn’t quite over yet! The final descent into the city is spectacular, winding through Asia’s largest graveyard with views of Taipei 101 in the background, and you’ll arrive in town by mid-afternoon – so if you’ve got to dash off back home then by all means do, but why not stick around for the evening and celebrate with a traditional hotpot dinner at one of Taipei’s most famous local restaurants?

Our local Taiwanese guide and ride leader will keep you abreast with everything you could ever want to know about Taiwan, and a support vehicle will follow your every pedal, keeping you hydrated, well fed and in high spirits during the big climbs. Our route is very manageable for most regular cyclists, however, there are some relatively large climbs in the route so this trip should only be attempted by those who have some experience of riding similar distances.
