Today, with its picturesque stone walls, narrow cobblestone streets and tea houses, the ancient city has become an inspirational mecca for artists, writers, and movie directors.

Meet Her Royal Highness: Yehliu National Geo Park
Yehliu lies in one of the most remarkable geological coastal areas in northern Taiwan, and is well-known for its rocky promontory overlooking the bay. Winds and waves shape the environment and make the scenic view magnificent. Local people have taken pleasure in naming the large rocks which dot the landscape after shapes which they resemble. When you see the “Queen’s Head” rock, you’ll feel like you’re in the presence of royalty.
The Golden Waterfall: Flowing Treasure
Although there is no actual gold flowing forth from these falls, the name reflects their appearance: the combination of regular rainfall in this mining area radiate a gold-like color.
Jiufen & Its Nostalgic Old Street
Jiufen, once a prosperous gold rush town before the 1970s, straddles the Pacific Ocean and is perfectly situated up in the hills. The most memorable part of being in Jiufen, without a doubt, is the long and narrow street market which stretches throughout the entire town. The streets are dotted with various shops for handicrafts, food, tea, snacks, toys and traditional souvenirs. Be sure to try some of the local foods, such as sweet taro balls, rice cakes and grilled squid…one bite and guaranteed you will be hooked!
Let’s Make a Wish – Sky Lantern
Make a wish, write it on the lantern and let it fly. The sky lantern festival has long been used for people to pray for their wishes. During the Lantern Festival, around February and March each year, lanterns cover the entire sky of Pingxi. If you’re an artist, writer, or photographer, we highly recommend you see this festival for yourself.

While in port in Taipei, spend time in the former gold mining town of Jiufen. Take the Great Ocean Road on your full-day shore excursion, stopping along the way to see Yehliu National Geopark’s fantastic geological formations. In Jiufen, stroll down Old Street with your knowledgeable guide and discover Taiwan’s movie-making history at the Shengping Theater House. Enjoy lunch and round-trip transport from the Keelung port. Numbers are limited to 15 people, ensuring a personalized experience with a small group.

After pickup by your guide from the Keelung port, begin your small-group shore excursion with a drive along Taiwan’s northeast coast to Yehliu National Geopark, located less than one hour away from Taipei along the Great Ocean Road. Famous for its rocky promontory overlooking the bay, Yehliu provides remarkable scenic views and coastal geological formations shaped over time by wind and waves.
Keep your camera ready for multiple photo ops of the phenomenal natural environment as you explore the large rocks dubbed with imaginative names such as Queen’s Head; many of the boulders are named by the locals for their resemblance to everyday objects. Stop at a fishing harbor for a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, then hop back in your minivan for the ride to Jiufen. Situated in the hills overlooking a small harbor, the once prosperous town is famous for its former gold mining industry.
Follow your guide down narrow cobbled streets past stone walls and tea houses. Learn how Jiufen was abandoned by the 1970s and nearly forgotten, but is now a mecca for artists and writers, inspiring films like A City of Sadness and Spirited Away. If you would like to try the local fare (own expense), Jiufen Old Street offers plentiful food stalls as well as souvenirs and teashops that stretch through the entire town. Stroll down the lengthy, narrow street brimming with traditional crafts and delicious snacks such as sweet taro balls, rice cakes and grilled squid.
Get a glimpse of old houses in Jiufen’s residential area and explore an old pathway where mountains meet the Pacific Ocean before your guide takes you to the restored Shengping Theater House. Originally built for the mineworkers' after-hours entertainment, it was the first movie theater in northern Taiwan.
Admire authentic details such as the ticket office, seats and stage, as well as vintage movie posters and defunct equipment. Listen to tales about Spirited Away, which won the 2002 Oscar for Best Animated Feature, and see some of the signature locations from the movie. Hear about the director, Hayao Miyazaki, who was inspired by the scenic beauty of Jiufen on a long visit to Taiwan and used the town’s scenery as a backdrop for the Japanese film.
Your small-group shore excursion of Jiufen ends in the evening with drop-off at the cruise terminal.

Located in the southern part of Taiwan, Kaohsiung is generally sunny year round. Also known as "Taiwan's Maritime Capital," the city has worked hard recent years to improve the urban landscape and infrastructure in order to provide a comfortable and beautiful city for the locals as well as visitors. Visit Fo Guang Shan, the largest Buddhist organization in the world and also some temples around the Lotus Pond.

When your cruise arrives at Kaohsiung Port, you will be picked up at the port at 8:00 AM and transferred to the famous Fo Guang Shan. It is an international Chinese Mahayana Buddhist monastic order based in Taiwan. Founded by Venerable Master Hsing Yun in 1967, the order promotes Humanistic Buddhism with aims to propagate Buddhist teachings through cultural activities, foster talent through education, benefit society through charitable programs, and to purify human hearts and minds through Buddhist practice.
Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant that offers both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals. After lunch you will visit the Lotus Pond, a beautiful artificial lake in Kaohsiung City. Opened in 1951, it is famous for not only the lotus, but also some temples around the lake, including the Spring and Autumn Pavilions and the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas. It is definitely a great place for photos and lighthearted experience. When the tour ends, you will be dropped off at the port to board your cruise ship.
