  • If you feel you spend enough time in crowded urban environments, and the hills visible from every part of the capital are calling to you, we can drive you up to Yangmingshan National Park via Martyrs Shrine, where the hourly changing of the guard is a display of breathtaking precision.

  • On Yangmingshan we can enjoy the view over coffee and cake at Grass Mountain Chateau. A former residence of Chiang Kai-shek, it was built in 1920; even after a complete renovation less than a decade ago it continues to look thoroughly Japanese. The national park is criss-crossed by hiking paths; we can recommend one that matches your stamina and enthusiasm.

  • Yangmingshan and nearby Beitou are riddled with hot springs: If you’d like to soak awhile, let us know in advance and we’ll arrange a stop at an outdoor spring. If the ocean beckons, we can instead drive through the national park to Jinshan and return to the capital via Fuji Fishing Harbour (for a lunch of ultra-fresh seafood), the beach called Baishawan (for a splash in the water) and the historic riverside town of Tamsui. One of the most visible and intriguing landmarks here is the castle-like Fort San Domingo.

  • Another outdoors option – and one that deserves an entire day – is the indigenous enclave of Wulai. Much loved by birdwatchers, hot-springs fans and hikers, Taipei residents are indeed lucky to have this gorgeous realm of forest and mountain on their doorstep.

Enjoy a full one-day food tour as you taste a variety of traditional Taiwanese snacks and meals in Taipei. From beef noodles to bubble milk tea, you'll explore signature dishes in local neighborhoods and see cultural landmarks around the city.

Itinerary:

  • We will pick you up from your hotel and start in the compact Kang Qing Long neighborhood, so called because it includes Yongkang, Qingtian and Longquan streets. Many excellent meals can be enjoyed here; around every corner, there is an inviting tea house or secondhand bookstore. If a reviving coffee is called for, intriguing options include the Formosa Vintage Museum Cafe or Café Libero.
  • Beef noodles is one of Taipei’s signature dishes and we’ll take you to one of the very best beef restaurants.
  • After a look at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall (a landmark dedicated to Taiwan and Nationalist China’s former leader), it’ll be time for another Taiwan F&B creation: bubble milk tea at Chun Shui Tang, the teahouse that makes a credible claim to have invented the beverage.
  • Around 4:30 pm, we will go up to the observatory at Taipei 101 for sunset views over the city. There’s no need to leave the building for dinner: The world’s second-tallest skyscraper has its own branch of Din Tai Fung, the rightfully world-famous dumplings restaurant.
  • After dinner, we can hit a night market for a little stroll. We prefer one that doesn’t seem to be on many tourists’ maps, for a more authentic experience.
  • We'll finish the night dropping you back to your hotel after the night market.

Enjoy a  full one-day private tour exploring the historic villages of Jiufen and Pingxi.

Pickup from your hotel in Greater Taipei, or Taipei or Keelung railway stations. Includes lunch, mineral water and insurance.

Itinerary:

  • The hills to the east of Taipei are dotted with tiny settlements that boomed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries thanks to the area’s coal, copper and gold deposits. When mineral extraction ended most inhabitants sought jobs and better lives elsewhere, leaving towns full of history and memories.
  • Jiufen, so bustling in the 1930s that outsiders nicknamed it ‘Little Shanghai’, has been rescued from obscurity by tourists who adore the narrow streets, quaint atmosphere and superb panoramas down towards the sea. It’s a place that rewards those who wander purposelessly – but we’ll make sure you find the tastiest taro balls (a local speciality) and the teahouse with the best views.
  • Moving onto to the string of villages served by the Pingxi Branch Railway Line, we’ll learn about an intriguing local tradition: The launching of ‘sky lanterns’, paper-covered bamboo frames propelled upwards by the heat of a burning wick. Originally used in the bandit-ridden past by remote households wanting to tell their neighbours that all was well, the custom is now popular with visitors of all ages who daub their wishes on the sides of a lantern then watch it float off into the distance. If you fancy launching a lantern we’ll help you do it in the most environmentally-friendly way possible.
  • Depending on the location of your hotel (or the transport hub you wish to be transferred to) the drive back to the city is very likely to be another opportunity to take in more of this region’s rugged, verdant scenery.

Itinerary:

  • In the very heart of Taiwan, this sparkling body of water known as Sun Moon Lake, is surrounded by verdant mountains and draws sightseers from across the world.
  • But our fun begins even before we set eyes on the lake. Take a quick tour of Antique Assam Tea Farm, a restored Japanese-era tea plantation, is as educational as it is scenic; tea tastings can be arranged.
  • On reaching the lakeshore, we’ll introduce you to our trusted boating partners for up to 90 minutes of gentle cruising across the waters, during which you’ll enjoy fine views of some of the landmarks we’ll be bringing to you after lunch in a popular local restaurant.
  • One major sight is Cien Pagoda, a tower built on the orders of Chiang Kai-shek to honour his late mother. Another is Wenwu Temple, perfectly located for splendid views over the water, and unusual in being dedicated to both the scholar Confucius (China’s most revered philosopher) and the soldier Guan Gong (a great general now worshipped as a god).
  • The Sun Moon Lake area is the traditional stomping ground of one of Taiwan’s smallest indigenous groups, the Austronesian Thao people, and we’ll learn a bit about them at the water’s edge village of Ita Thao.
  • You’ll have time to wander a little here before transferring back to your hotel or the transport hub of your choice.

Itinerary:

  • Tainan is where Han Chinese culture in Taiwan began, and a good part of the day will be spent in Anping, the oldest part of the city.
  • The main attraction in this seaside community is Fort Zeelandia, a stronghold built by the Dutch East India Company in the the early 1630s. It’s perhaps the best place to learn about the Netherlands’ brief but historically critical occupation of the Tainan area.
  • Nearby stands Anping Tree House, a 19th-century warehouse invaded by huge banyan trees and dubbed ‘Tainan’s Angkor Wat’.
  • Next up we’ll show you around central Tainan, where the density of historical curiosities is stupendous. Within Taiwan, Tainan is regarded as a foodie’s paradise, and our lunch will include some of the city’s most famous dishes.
  • Then we’ll head to the Confucius Temple, an austerely beautiful academy-cum-house of worship. It and several other places of interest are open until late in the evening, and especially atmospheric after dark, so extending the tour until quite late in the evening is possible if arranged in advance.
  • A craft beer on atmospheric Shennong Street or a coffee in the garden of Chihkan Tower (the other fort built by the Dutch in the 17th century) are delightful ways to end the excursion before transferring to your hotel or the transport hub of your choice.
