  • Chiayi thrived during the Japanese colonial period due to the logging carried out in the nearby mountains, and it’s no surprise that parts of the Former Chiayi Prison are made of wood from hills. The jail, which functioned until 1994, is now preserved as an intriguing museum of sorts. Mountain timber was also used to build what’s now called Hinoki Village.
  • Originally a set of dormitories for forest-management officials and their families, the village is a lovely spot for a coffee or an ice cream.
  • Half an hour’s drive from the city stands one of most important museum developments of recent decades. The Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum has superb permanent displays on tea culture, Asian textiles and Buddhist Art, as well as world-class temporary exhibitions.
  • The museum is very close to Chiayi High-Speed Railway Station; alternatively we can transfer you back to your hotel or another transport hub.

Enjoy a  full one-day private tour exploring the city of Hsinchu and the Hakka Heartland.

Pickup from your hotel in Hsinchu or Taipei or Hsinchu railway stations. Includes lunch, mineral water and insurance.

Itinerary:

  • Hsinchu City is synonymous with high-tech industry. Few non-Taiwanese know that the nearby interior is both a bastion of Hakka culture and awash with pretty little towns and endearing country scenes.
  • For this tour we’ll take you out of the city and into the foothills where tea and fruit are grown, and where tradition still plays a major role in people’s lives.
  • Beipu, founded in 1835 by armed Hakka settlers, is a place where the past can still be seen and touched. A good bit of 19th-century character remains, including  shops that sell camphor oil, a key commodity in the Taiwan of yesteryear, and restaurants that serve frog meat and offal. Lunch will include more mainstream Hakka delicacies – but if you’re an adventurous gourmand let us know and we’ll order accordingly!
  • In the past, many Hakka dishes were regarded as oily and salty; in line with the modern preference for healthy fare, innovative chefs have updated the cuisine, while retaining its characteristic pork and pickle flavours. While in Beipu you can also try your hand at making leicha, a nourishing blend of tea leaves, seeds, nuts and grains.
  • Inland Hsinchu is where Taiwan’s oriental beauty tea is grown. In the afternoon, we’ll tour the Fuxing Tea Demonstration Centre in Emei. There we’ll try local green, oolong and oriental beauty teas, and take a look at the pre-World War II tea-processing equipment that’s preserved inside.
  • Before transferring back to your hotel or the transport hub of your choice we may be able to fit in a brief stop at the region’s most important religious site: Baozhong Temple commemorates Hakka volunteers who died defending their communities during rebellions in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Enjoy a  full one-day private tour exploring the Taiwan's amazing eastern coast around Hualien county.

Pickup from your hotel in Hualien, or Hualien railway station or airport. Includes lunch, mineral water and insurance.

Itinerary:

  • Most visitors to Hualien focus on Taroko Gorge. It should be everyone’s priority, of course, but the region has a great deal beyond the gorge. Hualien, Taiwan’s largest county by land area, is thinly populated by a diverse blend of ethnic groups.
  • The townships between the Central Mountain Range and the Coastal Mountain Range occupy a gorgeous valley filled with bucolic hamlets and alluring views.
  • Our first halt isn’t far from Hualien City. We’ll drive via Liyu Lake to Baibao Brook, a gorgeous mountain stream and prime ecotourism attraction. Then comes Lintianshan, a former logging settlement where you’ll get a glimpse of life as it was lived in these parts more than 80 years ago.
  • Continuing southwards, at Guangfu we can enjoy ice cream or coffee while wandering through the disused and war-damaged yet still imposing former sugar refinery. Ruisui is famous for its hot springs. If you think you may want to soak, bring your swimsuit and let us know in advance so we can make the arrangements.
  • From there we can take a little-used back road through the hills to the coast and transfer you back to your hotel or the transport hub of your choice.

The lighthouse here has been helping ships avoid the area’s coral reefs for over 130 years, and from it it’s a short walk to Taiwan’s southernmost point.
  • Continuing around the cape brings us to Longpan Park, a wild realm of crumbling cliffs and wind-battered grasslands. By the time we transfer you back to your hotel or the transport hub of your choice, you’re sure to agree that Kenting is a great place to throw off the stresses of urban living.

Enjoy a  full one-day private tour exploring the Taiwan's amazing Northern coast.

Pickup from your hotel in Greater Taipei, or Taipei or Keelung railway stations. Includes lunch, mineral water and insurance.

Itinerary:

  • As green and rugged as Ireland, yet often blessed with strikingly sunny weather, Taiwan’s north coast offers a rich variety of landscapes. Before the sun gets too high in the sky, we’ll reach Yehliu Geopark, a peninsula shaped by wind and wave erosion.
  • This natural wonderland is adored by geologists, kids and everyone else on account of its engrossing caves, hoodoos, potholes, overhangs, honeycombed outcrops, and rocks marked with swirls or concentric ripples.
  • The north coast is dotted with little fishing villages like Guihou, very close to Yehliu. It’s also the region where many of the crabs eaten in Taiwan are caught using baited cages.
  • After a lunch of super-fresh local seafood we’ll head into Keelung and learn a bit about the history of the city. Being the north’s major port it has been subjected to attack and invasion by foreign powers. Those willing to walk a bit can enjoy the historic remains of Dawulun Fort and superb ocean views.
  • Keelung is one place where we really do recommend arranging in advance to extend the tour until well after sunset so you can make the most of one of Taiwan’s most famous night markets.
  • Very few of the vendors at Miaokow Night Bazaar have English-language menus or English-speaking staff, but our guide will help you find some delicacies to your liking. By 8pm we’ll be heading back to your hotel or the transport hub of your choice.
